Volume 2 Segment 5
Chapter 8 – Summer in the South Part 2
In front of the manor, as soon as we got off the carriage, a gentle voice called out to Linne.
“Ooh, my Linne.”
Linne hugged Grandfather Rien. His head was full of white hair and his smile was gentle. He was wearing his usual farm clothes, perhaps he had been in the field up until now.
Somehow, it felt so long ago since Linne last saw him.
“You’ve grown bigger again, haven’t you? How is school? I heard you made some friends. Ah, that’s right, I have lots of the honey that you love so much.”
“Come now, my dear. Linne can’t answer that many questions at once, you know? Linne, welcome back.”
Linne let go of Grandfather and greeted Grandmother Lindsey who was right beside him.
She still had the same beautiful red hair, just like Mother!
What was different was Grandmother’s expression, which was so cheerful and bright.
“Now, now, Linne, you’re always the spoiled girl, aren’t you?”
“I am! Only in front of Grandfather, Grandmother… and Nii-sama.”
“Nii? Aah, him! But, my? Is he not with you?”
“…Nii-sama has to stay in the Royal Capital for work. Ah, but, he gave Linne loads of homework to do! See!”
Linne showed them Nii-sama’s handmade textbooks that she had in her bag.
There were instructions on how to work Linne’s mana more subtly—the one thing Linne was bad at—as well as new magic spells that Linne was told to learn during the vacation.
“Ooh, quite the number.”
“Dear me, it is a lot. Lisa, is he not coming home with you?”
“I also wished he would, but my girl is having a bit of a problem, you see—I am home, Father, Mother.”
Mother, who had gotten off her carriage before Linne knew it, prompted at Nee-sama with her gaze. The latter seemed really disgruntled, then shook her head left and right before she gave a smile to Grandfather and Grandmother.
N-, Nee-sama, umm…
“Allen is growing into such a good man. Someday, not only the other Duke Houses, but even the Royal Family will try to bring him in. The Howards, for one, have already started to move. But… just whoever did she take it after? Lidya is such a late-bloomer. If this continues on, I’m afraid other girls would…”
“It. Is. All. Right! I have no intention of giving Allen away to anyone—”
“Oh I wish. As you can see with her, Father, Mother.”
M-, Mother, umm, N-, Nee-sama seems like she’s about to, umm…
Feathers of flame began to fly around. A powerful pulse of mana throbbed in the air.
And more importantly—Nee-sama’s lips twisted into a smile. Ah, th-, that’s BAD!!
“Yes~♪ Linne-sama, Grandmaster, please come near me.”
“My oh my. Anna, should I stay where I am?”
“Of course, Grandmadam.”
Linne and Grandfather took refuge behind the countless Fireproof barriers that Anna and her maids erected. As soon as we moved, countless Stone Walls and Water Walls covered the surroundings.
“…Dear Mother. If I recall, on our way here, you’ve been saying that Allen and I are not suited for each other, that some other girl will steal him away, that the reason he didn’t come with us this time is because he’s fed up with me… haven’t you gone a bit too far with your words?”
“Have I? To say the least, Allen is growing even as we speak, but how about you? Four years passed and you still haven’t been honest with him. The only thing developing about you is your proficiency in sword and magic. Those alone won’t give you the qualification to stand by his side, do you understand that?”
“O-, of course I do! You don’t need to say it out loud!!”
“…No, I will say it. Lidya, you are depending too much on Allen’s kindness. My goodness. If you keep this up, either Stella or maybe Felicia will be the one to—”
‘Flaming Bird’ flew.
—Moher cut it down with her hand chop. On the side, Grandmother made a remark “My, my. What a mischievous pair.” …Does this still count as ‘mischief”?
Nee-sama clicked her tongue and summoned ‘True Crimson’ out of the air whilst also drawing the sword on her waist. Uwah… sh-, she’s serious, double serious.
“What a helpless girl. Anna!”
“Yes Madam~ ♪”
Anna threw a crimson-colored parasol that she had been holding for a while to Mother.
Mother picked it up with a beautiful gesture then pointed its tip at Nee-sama.
“If you had Allen with you, I would have used a sword too. But with you alone, this should suffice.”
“…Bring it on.”
Nee-sama was ready to charge in with her dual sword.
Mother was waiting for her with a placid smile.
Grandfather and Linne sat down on the chairs that had been prepared for us and sighed.
“Haah… Why do Mother and Nee-sama always, always…”
“You’re right. Even though both Lisa and Lidya used to be such good girls, too…”
“Please watch out, Ojou-sama, Grandmaster. They are starting.”
Instantly, ‘Flaming Bird’ swooped down right from above Mother.
Mother opened her parasol, having it clash the spell. It scattered away.
At the same time, Nee-sama closed the distance and swung her sword.
“Ready your will, Mother!!”
“You dare to say those words to your own Mother!!”
The parasol that just dispersed the Flaming Bird caught the advances of Nee-sama’s swords. Nee-sama then followed it up with an overwhelmingly fast slash, only to be parried effortlessly by Mother.
Umm, isn’t that…
Anna nodded to Linne’s suspicion as she slowly poured black tea on a cup.
“It’s a normal parasol that Allen-sama bought as a present just the other day. It doesn’t have any special mana in it.”
“…I thought Nee-sama was being quite serious.”
“She did pull out ‘True Crimson’, after all. However.”
“Lidya-ojousama’s strength literally corresponds to how close Allen-sama is to her, so it is no wonder why she is lacking power. After all, Allen-sama is not here to watch over her.”
“Oh, Linne thinks she gets it.”
Perhaps she understood that she made no progress, Nee-sama took a distance away.
Mother opened her parasol again, seeming to wait for Nee-sama to make another move.
It was then—
“My, my. Lisa and Lidya seem to be having so much fun. Would you mind if I join in?”
Uwah… now even Grandmother is in the mood…
N-, Nii-sama, you should have come with us, after all!
