The Little Duchess' Home Tutor (Novel) - V2 C14
Volume 2 Segment 5
Chapter 14 – Riot in the Capital Part 5
Sheryl and I headed down the corridor once again. Chiffon’s bushy tail swayed as he led the way.
“…You really are cruel, Allen. You never even came to see me! Even though you keep pampering Lidya all the time!”
“…Think about our positions. You are a sovereign princess, I’m a commoner.”
The princess who walked next to me stared daggers. Her eyes showed clear displease.
As if sensing the change in his master, Chiffon also turned around and bumped her tail against me.
“You think I don’t know?”
“You are tutoring Howards’ and Leinsters’ successors, aren’t you? You even brought them to your parents’ house.”
“…Well, it just happened.”
“Heeh, it just happened, huh.”
“They are all brilliant girls, you know? At least as bright as you and Lidya when you were their age.”
“That’s because you’re with them, is it not? It’s only obvious that they’ll be as bright as you describe. Both Lidya and I wouldn’t be the way we are now without you.”
I shrugged my shoulders and waved my hand lightly.
For a long time now I’ve been thinking that this princess has been overvaluing me too much.
I’m sure that both she and Lidya would have made it anyway without me.
“…Can we have a serious talk now?”
“I have been serious all this time. The most serious I can be. I, your friend for several years, have never even been invited to your parents, and yet some younger girls you met earlier this year have already gone and met them.”
“—It’s about your brother. Is he…”
Her voice was serene.
Sheryl stopped and stared at me.
“It should be me, no, the entire Wainwright Royal Family who should be apologizing to you. You stopped that man from doing something so ridiculously stupid and once again saved the Kingdom from crisis. That’s all there is to it, is it not? …You know, don’t you? The relationship between Me, Gerald, and John-aniue aren’t exactly filled with laughter and roses. John-aniue and I barely speak to each other, that’s the most accurate description for our relationship.”
“…Even though you are half-siblings related by blood?”
“It is exactly because we are related by blood. For me, the only ones I can call my family are Mom and Father. And Chiffon too. I don’t even know how many times I thought of running away from the Palace after Mom died. But, you see.”
As she pat Chiffon’s head when he approached her, Sheryl turned a gentle gaze at me. Her tone reminded me of our school days together; a little bit teasing and smug. Coupled with her trademark beautiful smile.
One which hid loneliness and dependence.
“I met you and Lidya. Whatever might happen—that is, even if the Demon Lord’s army in the west resumed their campaign eastward, the day the world meets its end, I know I can put my trust in you two. I mean, if you think about it, isn’t that pretty amazing?”
“Personally, I trust you and Lidya, my two best friends, more than my brothers whose only connection between us is our blood. Even if you don’t want it.”
A large door came into view, voices were heard from within.
Well, let’s go—A warm sensation touched my left hand.
“If we are holding hands, those idiots won’t be able to say their piece, right? It’s alright, Allen. All you need to do is explain the situation and your thoughts on the matter to Father. As long as Lidya isn’t here, it’s my job to protect you!”
“And Chiffon’s too ♪”
“…Can’t win against you and Lidya, can I? Let’s go.”
“We cannot possibly evacuate the Royal Palace! Even those rebels won’t push themselves so hard!”
“The Palace also has several layers of defensive barriers put in place. We numbered few, but we can hold ourselves out. If we wait for a few days, Chivalric Orders from all the Dukes, as well as troops from all over the Kingdom, will gather in the Royal Capital!”
“…I’ve been telling you, we can’t hold that—Aah, Allen.”
Richard was fighting a battle of wits all by himself in the throne room. When he saw me, he gave out a helpless smile.
The nobles who opposed the retreat plan looked at me dubiously, ready to open their mouths, but noticed Cheryl by my side and grew restless.
Her Excellency the Princess herself had put an indifferent smile on her face. This girl can be quite scary.
A daring voice called me out.
“I’ve been waiting for you, Allen.”
I got down on one knee, my head hung down.
Chiffon also sat down. Good boy.
“Enough. Raise your head. I want to know how the situation is and what your take on it is.”
“Y-, Your Majesty, you must not allow such a crude man to speak directly to you! Remember what this man did to Gerald-sama!”
“Time is of essence. What happened to Gerald was his own fault, he reaped what he sowed. Allen did nothing wrong! I ask any of you, is there anyone in this room who has seen more fights than ‘The Sword Princess’ Brain’? No? If so, Allen, speak.”
The fat nobleman who tried to stop me withdrew, his teeth clattering.
I raise my face and look at His Majesty straight in the eyes.
“We have not a moment to lose. I ask Your Majesty and Your Highnesses the Prince and the Princess to promptly evacuate the premises.”
“…Personally, I wanted to strike back at those rebels myself.”
“Your valor is unquestionable, Your Majesty. However, I must wonder if it is possible for us to resist an army of several, if not more than ten thousand men by ourselves. The Kingdom may possess a lot of valiant warriors at the moment, but the only people who can decisively change the tide of this war singlehandedly are the ‘Sword Princess,’ the Duchess of Leinster, and the ‘Commander of the Kingsguard Order’. And none of them are present. Both the Professor and the Headmaster of the Royal Academy are also absent. This rebellion is deliberately timed. Now that the Duchal House of Algren have started such a rebellion, they are taking steps to stall the other three Dukes. I believe we should assume that they have some sort of agreement with the Empire and the Principality Union.”
The throne room buzzed.
In the north, the Howard Household is facing the Empire.
In the South, the Leinster Household is facing the Principality.
Both of these countries used to be our ally in the Demon Lord War in the past.
…But, once the crisis passed, so did our relationship.
While there have been no major wars, skirmishes in the border have been an everyday occurrence. From both country’s interests, this event seemed to be a great opportunity to reduce our power.
…Well, it’s nothing more than a suicidal action, though.
Either way, the Duchal House of Algren wants to buy more time. In the meantime…
“With all due respect…what the rebels after are the lives of Your Majesty and both sovereign Prince and Princess. I am sure that a puppet king would be installed following their mission accomplishment. Even with the best of the Kingsguard Order at our disposal, it will be difficult to buy time for our reinforcement as we are defending. Please, evacuate! —As meager as my power may be, I, along with the Kingsguard Order, will serve Your Majesty.”
