The Little Duchess' Home Tutor (Novel) - V1 Ex13
Volume 1 Segment 4
Extra 13 – Question
“We will now start the trial. Defendant, step forward.”
“Oh my? How very laudable. I wonder if that means you’ve learned your lesson?”
“Don’t get fooled, Ane-sama. Miss Top Student is an exceptional actress! …Really, you don’t know how worried I was.”
“Tina Ojou-sama, please seriously reflect on your actions!!”
“She’s right, Tina. You really worried us all.”
“…The trial is in session. The agenda is ‘To decide the sanction for Her Highness Tina Howard for stealing a march on us——specifically, a march on our relationship with Nii-san.’ The defendant has no right to defend or argue. Disobedience will be met with force.”
Declared Karen, anger seeping in her eyes.
Dear me…she is angry for real. Flashes of lightning have been jolting around the room for a while.
The others were both equally angry and worried. While Lidya——-had the eyes of a cat who got her prey. She’s having fun, isn’t she.
——And here I wondered why everyone suddenly came to my ward. Something like this isn’t necessary.
“Aah, Karen. You’re getting mad again, aren’t you?”
“You stay silent, Nii-san! …We have to make it right. If this girl didn’t intervene, you wouldn’t have been injured so fatally, Nii-san!! Do you even know how I felt when I saw you lose consciousness?”
“…I’m sorry. But”
“I’m of the same opinion. I can’t have you lose consciousness every time; what will people say of me then? Not to mention…”
For a moment, a serious expression flashed across her face.
Oh, I see now. You’re questioning it too, huh.
“There is something I want to ask.”
“I’m sorry, Sensei. I really, really am reflecting on it. I was being conceited and…I wanted to help you but I was slowing you down, and…but, but still! I don’t want to part with Sensei…p-, please don’t resign.”
“It was a possibility.”
Answered my little sister all too calmly. You’re intimidating her too much.
I saw Tina shivering in front of us. Geez.
I tried to get off the bed, but both of my hands were firmly seized. That hurts.
“What do you think you’re doing?”
“You lay down, Nii-san. You shouldn’t be in your top condition yet. …I heard you also lost a huge amount of blood. You are completely prohibited from pushing yourself.”
“You two are too overprotective, Lidya, Karen.”
“We are not. Are we, Karen?”
“We are just doing what is necessary.”
“…Just a few steps won’t hurt. But, thank you.”
I lightly pat the two’s heads then got off the bed.
I went to Tina’s side. Her eyes were watery, so I bent my knees and leveled our gazes.
“Tina, look at me.”
“Karen intimated you too much, didn’t she? It’s alright. I won’t resign from being a Home Tutor, and I won’t come to hate you either.”
“Yes. However, no chasing after danger again. My heart can’t handle it. If you wish to help me, let’s see…At least you need to be on the same level as Karen. How does that sound?”
“…In other words, from now on, if similar cases are to happen again, you will bring at least Lidya-san and I. Can I take it as such, Nii-san?”
“I don’t think it will happen again, though. Stella-sama, Ellie, Linne too, please remember that. Well, it’s not like I run into danger everyday, though.”
My body would break down if the same thing happened time and time again.
Secretly, I was proud that I had gotten through the classes to handle similar experiences back in my academy days.
——Lidya didn’t seem so pleased with it. I had to convince her later, didn’t I?
“Now let’s talk about the real issue at hand. Tina.”
“There is one thing I keep questioning myself about…that time, how did you manage to come all the way to the rooftop?”
——Exactly. Back then, in the mansion, there were Lidya and I, as well as the Kingsguard Order led by Owen, not to mention a crowd of skilled enemy soldiers.
Nevertheless, this girl somehow chased after me and Gerald to the eye of the battlefield.
…without anyone noticing her.
Even like this, I believed that my mana control and mana perceivability were not bad whatsoever. Not to mention, if it was in regards to Tina’s mana of all things. I should have been able to tell it was her the very moment she stepped inside the mansion, and yet I couldn’t.
It was as if——
“We are incapable of perceiving beings that are too large for us to perceive. That is why, sometimes, we cannot see things we are supposed to see.”
“…Our mother used to tell me that when I was little. Allen-sama, most probably, the reason why she was unable to be sensed by anyone is”
“Yes, I fear so. Tina, when you wished to save me and ran off, did you hear a ‘voice’ talking to you?”
“…I’m sorry. I can’t remember it. I was in a daze when I ran through the mansion, and when I came to, I saw you fighting…”
To think she was unconscious the whole time.
I checked the back of her hand, and I couldn’t find the crest that was present just a few days ago.
There were still too many unknown things to this whole business..
“I understand. Thank you very much. Tina, it’s correct to say that what you did was reckless. But…look, I am alive. I am sure you have reflected enough.”
I clapped my hands.
Everyone, except Lidya, seemed to be surprised with my decision.
“This is the end of the matter. You’re okay with it right, Karen?”
“…I still am not convinced.”
“…But if you say so, Nii-san.”
“Thank you. Tina.”
“——You did well. Good job.”
Plop, I lightly pat the head of the dumbfounded girl in front of me before I stood up.
When I beckoned at Ellie and Linne, both of them came walking over. The rest is up to you two.
I glanced at Lidya who’d been silent. This is going to get hard, huh.
——After returning to the Royal Capital, I came to realize something.
Once things started to move in an unexpected direction, a single person couldn’t change its course all by himself, and it would still be difficult even with two.
