The Little Duchess' Home Tutor - Chapter 9
Volume 1 Segment 1
Chapter 9 – Frustration
“In other words—Even you cannot help Tina use Magic.”
There was a mixture of disappointment and resignation hinted in the Duke’s tone.
He must have received the same report many times before. But despite being devastated by the news every time, he still looked for a tutor to fulfill his daughter’s wish—
If that repeated time and time again, then such a tone would inevitably come out.
“I have heard how Ellie develops her talent after being taught the same materials… the irony is hard to accept.”
“Her Highness’ mana is enormous. There is no flaw in her formula construction either. Nevertheless…”
“…Regardless of that, her magic still doesn’t activate, right? The same also happens with the new formula you devised.”
“Yes. Miss Ellie showed more results than hoped, and yet…”
It has been roughly a month since I began the magic exercise for them.
During that time, the one who showed a remarkable growth—was Ellie.
From the existing spells that forcibly activated only one attribute, to a simple spell (or more like a “play” as the spirits were let to do whatever they wanted with her mana) I taught, she absorbed everything like dry soil meeting water.
Now she succeeded not only in blooming the Fire and Wind flowers, but also the Earth flower as well. A little more time and she would be able to bloom the Water flower. She had a hard time blooming the Lightning and Darkness flowers, but she should make it in time for the Light flower.
In her case, her academics were more worrying. The only way to solve this was to have her do the predicted exam paper again and again. She had basic education hammered into her (as expected of a Duke’s Household!), so it wasn’t an extreme case.
In comparison, Her Highness was—not showing any hopeful results.
Pre-existing spells didn’t activate for her at all, the same goes for the ones I devised.
I suspected that her enormous mana was where the problem lay, so I told her to revise the formula by cutting the mana supply short, but it still didn’t work. If so, I thought about forcibly activating the formula by overflowing it with mana, but it still wouldn’t work.
If you asked me whether her mana itself was the problem, then I’d have to answer that it wasn’t. Her mana was perfectly normal.
Her formula construction was even more perfect than Ellie’s. So much that I found myself fascinated.
Nevertheless—it didn’t activate.
I felt impatience budding in my heart. Just why….
“What do you think? The entrance exam is only 2 months away.”
“May I say what I honestly feel?”
“Her Highness will surely be able to use Magic. There is no doubt about it. However—It’s still unknown whether she will make it in time for the entrance exam.”
“…And so, you’re going to make her give up like how I ask you?”
“No. Even if she couldn’t use magic, I believe that Her Highness still can attend the Royal Academy if she wished so.”
The Duke closed his eyes. He took a deep sigh.
And then, he opened his mouth.
“—Preferential measure, is it?”
“Yes. Her Highness more than qualifies. In the slightest chance that they failed her, then I would question their sanity.”
“…I should have been happier to hear you value her that highly.”
“Your Majesty, Her Highness is as talented as Lidya. Even that fact alone—”
“…I understand. I fully understand that. But, it will make that girl…”
An expression full of anguish showed itself on the Duke’s face.
I guessed he made that face not as a Duke, but as a father who thought of her daughter.
The second daughter of one of the Archdukes incapable of magic enrolled by preferential measures. She would stick out like a sore thumb. And there were people who would make fun of others everywhere.
“At any rate, I wish you’ll do your everything for her, but… if things stay the way it is in the next month, then I’ll have you do as I requested.”
“…I understand. Even though I may look like this, I have accomplished a lot of absurd tasks. I will make this a success.”
—Although the prospect doesn’t look any brighter.
I shall do something about it. As long as she has mana, there’s no abnormality, and her formula construction isn’t wrong, then there must be a cause to it.
When I headed to the room, I saw Her Highness resting her head on the desk, her eyes closed. She seemed to have nodded off.
She had been staying up late these days, frantic with the magic exercise, so she must have burnt herself out.
I approached her carefully to not wake her up, then sat down nearby.
I opened the old Magicology literature book I brought with me. I borrowed it from the Duke’s library, and there was magic from before the Demon Lord War written in it.
I had figured out that there were no cases similar to Her Highness’ at least a hundred years back. Anything prior to that was too vague to be tracked down.
If so, I must look at anything older than that. Fortunately, there were many old books in the Duke’s library.
—The serene time was passing by. It seemed like Ellie would be running late.
The literature was interesting, but it wasn’t what I needed. How unfortunate.
As I was reaching to get the next book, our gazes met.
“I woke you up, didn’t I? Forgive me.”
“It’s all right. That’s a very old book, isn’t it?”
“It seems to be a book predating the Demon Lord War.”
“…Is it for my sake?”
She asked with her utmost serious tone.
This girl was a little bit too serious. With a plop, I patted her head lightly.
“That’s not true. I’m doing this mostly for my hobby—”
“That’s a lie! I know how you read books until late at night, Sensei. Hundreds of them within this single month…”
“You don’t need to worry. I like reading books, you see.”
“Be more mad at me! Reproach me! The reason why I can’t use magic is because I… I have no talent…”
…She blames herself more than I thought.
A big part of it must be from how she watched Ellie grow besides her.
“I’m sorry. I’m unqualified to be a teacher, making my student say things like that.”
“I’m done with it… Even though I respect you so much… I love you so much… but everytime I see you praise Ellie, this wicked feeling keeps overflowing…. THAT’S WHY!!!”
—A moment later, a tremendous torrent of mana burst out.
