Chapter 30: I parry a dragon

As the dragon fell from the sky, a sense of confusion overcame it.
Why did it suddenly start falling down?
Why had it lost control of its body?
The last thing he remembered was itself preparing to cover the king in flames.
After that, its vision was clouded by a strong light.
At least it thought so…
No, impossible.
That strong light must have come from its flames, which were one of the strongest attacks known to humankind.
It would have completely obliterated everything in front of it almost immediately.
Then why was it falling from the sky?
As it fell, the scales that covered its back destroyed many of the structures beneath it, producing a loud screeching sound as it scratched the stone walls whilst its body sunk further towards the ground.
And still, the dragon failed to understand.
What the hell had happened?
Everything was so strange.
This feeling… it was like it had been blown away by something.
The dragon looked to the sky.
The dragon suddenly spotted something hiding high above the rubble and dust that permeated the air.
It was a small person… holding what seemed to be a black sword.
He was the same person it had seen right before it tried to attack.
He stood quietly above the scene, staring down at the dragon.
This?
Was it all because of this man?
The moment the dragon came to understand the situation at hand, it became furious.
There was no pain or injury in its body, but he still couldn’t allow this to happen.
It didn’t know how that man did it.
Nor did it know who that man was.
All it knew was this man was challenging it, locking them both in a battle to the death.
It couldn’t allow this.
The dragon roared in anger, sending shockwaves across the earth and sky.
There was no rhyme or reason to its anger.
It simply wanted to crush everything in its way.
To tear down everything and establish chaos within the kingdom.
It was acting purely on instinct, the instinct that had been carved into the dragon’s subconscious for centuries.
This pure rage was the result of thousands of years of experience.
The man was now standing on the ground, a few blocks away from where the dragon had fallen.
Without hesitation, the dragon flew straight towards him, bearing his claws that were several times as large as a human adult.
But…
“Parry!”
The dragon didn’t know what had happened at first.
The last thing it remembered was swinging its claws at the man.
These were the same claws that had torn down entire mountains, demolished countless castles, and even killed all his siblings with no remorse.
The earth cracked and sunk with a loud smashing sound.
That man should have been reduced to a single stain on the floor by now.
That was what was supposed to have happened.
However, after the dust had settled, the dragon noticed that the man was still standing calmly on the stone pavement.
It seemed to have parried its attack.
Such a thing was supposed to be impossible!
Without even thinking, the dragon instantly rotated its body, preparing to attack the man with its long tail, which boasts an even larger mass than its claws.
In the process, hundreds of homes were destroyed before its tail had even reached its target. But the dragon had no concern for this.
Listening to the sound of the stone cracking, the dragon became confident. Its tail was covered with thousands of scales, each tougher than iron.
This time, there would be no more problems. It was going to emerge from this battle victorious.
But…
“Parry!”
Immediately after it had finished its attack, the dragon felt an uncomfortable shiver permeate its body.
The next thing he knew, it was lying flat on the ground.
He again looked to the sky, where he saw his tail flying high above the kingdom.
???
The dragon had no idea what had just happened.
It sat up and realized that the small man was still standing strong on the stone pavement.
He was just standing there quietly as if nothing at all had happened, his black sword in hand.
What… is this?
What the hell was this?
The dragon wondered.
This small weakling had just… cut off its tail?
No.
There was no way.
There must be something wrong.
The dragon should have just used “it” from the beginning… its flame breath.
None of this would have happened if it just had decided to end this quickly.
The dragon opened its jaw, concentrating hundreds of years worth of magical power into this one attack.
The surrounding space became distorted.
The magical power at the back of its throat grew with every second, causing the air around them to become very hot.
The dragon’s facial muscles began to scream. They were being overloaded.
This is it. This time, it was confident there would be no more problems.
No mistakes.
There had been no creature that could withstand this attack.
The dragon had looked back at thousands of years’ worth of memories, battles and destruction; nothing had survived its flames.
This was the end for this man.
This was the end for the fool that had decided to challenge the dragon—the apex lifeform.
All of the dragon’s magical power was now concentrated into the back of its throat.
With its flames, it had destroyed countless nations, leaving little to no trace.
It had crushed many mountains, changed the earth’s landscape.
This was the flame that the dragon was proudest of, the flame that burned all of its enemies across thousands of years.
It was now about to be released for one small man.
The surrounding area turned white in an instant, and a streak of magical power was released from the dragon’s mouth, shooting in a straight line straight towards the man.
This would surely do the trick.
But…
“Parry!”
The dragon’s attack was completely blocked and instead redirected towards the sky.
How?
How was this happening?
Although the dragon was skeptical at first, he finally understood.
There was no doubt.
This guy had just avoided its most deadly and feared attack.
This man had single-handedly stopped the chaos and destruction it had planned to unleash upon the kingdom.
The dragon had no more choice.
He had to consider the man a worthy opponent—an equal, even.
An opponent that could match its power.
The dragon had no more ideas left.
You know, an existence with even a fraction of this level of power was almost like a curse.
It had encounters like these, that is, encounters with someone of equal strength.
The dragon needed to eliminate this man.
He needed to crush and burn him, removing all traces of his existence; not even a bone should be left.
Complete annihilation.
That was what the dragon needed to do, and yet, this was seeming like an almost impossible outcome.
However, the dragon could make no exception.
Not even for this man.
One of them had to go.
“Graaaaaaaaaawrrrrr!!”
The dragon again removed any semblance of rational thought from its consciousness and ceded all control to its hunger for destruction and power.
It put all its strength into each and every attack just to crush this annoying man, even going so far as to harm its own body to do so.
Its only goal now was to deal with this man.
It didn’t even know what to do afterward.
In such a weakened state, someone else in the kingdom may be able to finish it off.
All it could think about, however, was killing the man.
Every time it delivered a blow, the ground would get scooped up, shaking the earth vigorously and leaving large craters as remnants of this battle.
This was what the dragon did best.
After he had dealt with the man, it would again return to its slumber for another 100 years, the dragon told itself.
But…
As it continued its barrage of attacks, its anger slowly morphed into something else—doubt.
The dragon began to appeal to reason as its battle with the man dragged out.
Why was this guy still alive?
It had already surpassed its full power long ago.
Why wasn’t he dead yet?
How did its claws and scales become so damaged?
They were several times harder than iron and crystal; it would be nearly impossible to do this amount of damage to it.
But the man had still been able to cut them clean off as though they were pieces of paper.
This had never happened before.
Besides this, the dragon also became aware of something else.
This man wasn’t even trying to attack.
It was as if it was going easy on it, mocking its weakness.
The dragon had already recognized this man as its enemy, another entity worthy of rivaling its strength, so why wasn’t the man doing the same?
Was he just that strong?
Up until now, the dragon had treated all those who dared oppose him like they were nothing.
Nobody had been able to push it to its absolute limits.
They were all vulnerable.
Not like this man.
Not like right now.
Right now, the dragon was vulnerable.
The dragon regained its rage.
Such a thing could not be permitted.
It could not forgive the arrogance of this puny rat.
Only the strong should be able to survive.
The dragon lunged again at the man, baring its fangs.
However, he just stood still, waiting for the dragon’s approach.
“Parry!”
As the dragon’s fangs were hit by the sword, its neck bent and fell to the ground again.
???
The dragon crushed the ground, sinking deep into the earth as it created a massive crater.
Its anger was almost completely gone now, and all that was left was doubt.
It finally realized what was going on.
The world was dominated by the strong.
The strong would dominate the weak, and the weak must submit to the strong.
That is the principle that the dragon lived by.
It was the supreme logic to which the dragon adhered.
Being a monster, it had no choice but to submit to this.
It was the weak one.
It got up, planted its head firmly on the ground, and closed its eyes towards the man.
For the first time in its life, the dragon learned to submit to the strong.
