I will parry everything to become the greatest adventurer! - Chapter 18
Chapter 18: I parry a goblin
The goblin clutched a large tree between its hands as it stared at us with the eyes of a ferocious beast.
A dark, reddish tongue protruded from its mouth as it bared its fangs.
It didn’t seem to want to engage in combat just yet, however.
No, it was waiting… studying its prey.
Could Rin and I really fight this guy?
As my anxieties began to overrun me, I failed to realize that the goblin had already begun to raise the large tree high up into the air.
It was about to attack us.
At that moment, the entire sky blackened above us as the goblin swung the tree downwards at us.
It was much larger than we had thought.
If we were to get hit by that thing, we’d be dead for sure.
I had to do something.
I had drawn the Blackened Sword in response to the goblin’s attack, using it to block the gigantic tree.
Almost instantly, I felt an immense shock being transmitted through the blade down towards the handle.
The parry was successful, deviating the tree from its original trajectory, causing it to hit the ground beside us.
As soon as the dust cleared, I turned back. Rin was safe.
For the moment, at least…
Looking back towards the goblin, I saw that it was about to make its second attack.
It picked up another tree, which it then quickly sent hurtling towards us.
This thing was obviously intelligent, I no longer had any doubts about that.
It had anticipated that we would try to dodge this next attack, so it had already prepared yet another tree in its other hand, prepared to attack us as we recuperated.
It was incredible.
But I couldn’t let us die.
Rather than dodging, I used the Blackened Sword to parry the attack once again.
Although I didn’t expect it to do much, the goblin staggered back after I had delivered the parry, visibly confused as to what had just happened.
Now was our chance.
From my position, there was no way I could’ve engineered any successful counterattack.
I simply couldn’t recover in time after a direct parry.
But Rin could.
“Yes, sensei. Wind Blades!”
In an instant, a flurry of small wind knives were sent towards the goblin.
It ran through the forest, chopping down any trees that got in its way.
Rin’s barrage of wind blades was easily avoided by the goblin.
Not giving up, Rin created dozens of blocks of ice, each about the size of an adult human, and sent flying at the goblin.
There was no chance of dodging it this time.
Each shot was like a cannon. It had an enormous amount of power.
However, the attack almost completely missed.
The goblin was way too quick.
The only damage it had sustained was a small wound on its hand.
“No way…” I muttered.
I had heard goblins were quite fast, but to this extent?
This guy was able to weave through an entire army of icicles through this dense forest. It should have been impossible.
Enraged, the goblin began to throw more trees at us one after the other. Right now, I was fully committed to protecting Rin, so I did my best to deflect them.
This wasn’t looking good.
It didn’t seem like Rin’s spells were effective against it.
As for me, well, I had no means of attack whatsoever.
On top of that…
“The wound! It’s regenerating!?” I screamed.
The wound that Rin had inflicted onto the goblin’s hand was now gone.
“It must be because of the magic gem!” Rin replied, gazing at the goblin.
The magic gem…
It must be that magenta stone on the goblin’s forehead.
It looked much brighter compared to when we first saw it.
“What should we do?” I asked.
“Maybe that’s the source of the goblin’s power. We have to get rid of it!”
“Wait a minute…”
Since these guys were known to be the weakest monsters, it was bound to have many weak spots.
The problem was how to get there.
It was way too quick.
Even if I ran as fast as I could, there was no way I could catch up to it.
What should we do?
As we stood there, thinking about our next move, the goblin prepared its next set of attacks.
Before we knew it, wooden fragments had filled the air above us and were moments from reaching us.
As if this wasn’t enough, the goblin had grabbed yet another large tree and was about to throw it at us.
This was it.
We’re both dead.
The goblin had been analyzing us the entire time.
Until now, I had just been parrying off its attacks one by one.
It had noticed that, so it changed up its attacks, the more recent ones employing the use of dozens of trees at once, which were much more difficult to evade, but still doable.
Now, there was simply no hope.
The wooden fragments came down upon us like a hail of arrows.
I couldn’t protect her against this.
Rin had conjured up a tremendous storm.
The whole area trembled, making you feel as though you were experiencing an earthquake.
The wind pressure from Rin’s storm caused many trees to be uprooted from the forest.
Rin’s power… it was awe-inspiring.
At the same time, however, it gave me an idea.
“Rin! Hit me with that spell!” I told her.
“Windblast? That spell’s so strong it could tear down entire walls!”
“It’s alright! It’s the only way we’ll catch up to it!” I screamed.
“Alright…” Rin agreed reluctantly.
She moved closer to me and placed her hands on my back.
A strong shock hit my back.
To avoid any damage to my body, I activated my “Strengthen” spell and began to run with the wind.
The speed was incomparable to that of a normal human.
At the same time, I activated “Ninja Feet,” removing the air in front of me to reduce any friction, boosting me even more.
Previously, I had thought that the only thing “Ninja Feet” did was silence the noise of one’s footsteps.
However, I realized one day that there was much more to it than that.
During my training, there were times when I was slowed down by air resistance.
I found that by activating “Ninja Feet,” the air would part in front of me, eliminating any unwanted friction and allowing me to reach higher speeds.
Despite learning of this quite early on, I didn’t get many opportunities to practice the technique before now.
Each step I took felt so distant from the last.
I had to be extremely careful not to lose my balance.
I began to concentrate again.
I activated “Strengthen” again, channeling all its power into my legs to increase my speed even further.
The ground beneath me instantly cracked, and you could hear my muscles screaming in pain as I went faster and faster.
However, I wasn’t particularly worried about this. I was confident that my “Low Heal” skill could repair any muscle damage or broken bones instantly.
At this point, I had everything down to a rhythm. Each step was timed perfectly, as though I had an internal metronome inside of me.
The goblin had only just noticed my approach and was now trying to escape, running back into the cover of the forest.
Because I was faster.
I caught up with the goblin and leaped on its head, targeting the gem on its forehead.
Clinging to the goblin’s face, I grabbed onto the gem and pulled it straight out of its head.
A fresh stream of blood poured out of the hole in its head as it screamed in pain.
It ran around the forest in a mad frenzy, knocking down any trees along its path.
Without the gem giving it power, it seemed like it had lost its ability to regenerate its wounds.
Even as I leaped away, it still continued to writhe in agonizing pain.
To be completely honest, I did feel a little sorry for it, but then I remembered that this thing had already killed many before us.
“Rin? I’m sorry to ask, but I think it’s best if you finish this thing off.”
“Yes, understood. Psychic Flame!”
As soon as Rin had activated her spell, the goblin burst into a flurry of flames.
“I’m sorry, goblins,” I said silently to myself.
When the fire subsided, the charred body of the giant sank to the ground.
Rin and I had just defeated one of the weakest monsters. I had defeated my first goblin.
